Anyone who has worked in the security industry will tell you that you shouldn’t rely on the police to protect your person and property. They generally do their best, but there are only a few of them and plenty of opportunities for criminals.
Fortunately for the law-abiding majority of people, staying safe is 90% a matter of common sense. However, some video assistance or other technological help is often what you need, especially if this means spending $60 or so to protect a car or other asset worth thousands.
While we wouldn’t recommend using this device to spy on people, its discreet design makes it perfect for placing inside your luggage, under a vehicle seat, inside a safe, or even in a pocket.
The included magnet is surprisingly strong: you could, for instance, slap it onto the bottom of a car’s chassis without worrying about vibrations shaking it off. In this regard, it’s also nice that it’s basically 100% waterproof. At only 2¼ inches across, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a hiding place for it in covert applications.
Communication relies on the cellular network, which implies a monthly fee. The manufacturer has an agreement with AT&T and does not allow you to use a different carrier. They do, however, also sell a global version, which will work outside the U.S.A. Since this gadget can come in really handy when traveling, this might be the one to get.
The tracking functionality is supported by a mobile app called SilverCloud (iOS here). This is highly useful for fleet management in real time: you can, for example, instantly see the address where a vehicle is stopped, or create a virtual fence around some area and be notified by text if your GPS tracker crosses this boundary. If an incident should occur, the app makes it a matter of seconds to share real-time location data with a third party such as the cops.
The rechargeable lithium-ion battery should last about one week, depending on how much the tracker moves and how often it updates its location. You can have it do this as frequently as every couple of seconds, but this does mean a higher subscription fee. There is also an option to purchase a kit to wire it to a power source, which should make it run indefinitely.
Finally, this product is entirely made in America, and the company is known for their stellar customer service, which is certainly important to us.
