We selected the Remington iLIGHT Ultra as the “Best Whole Body Treatment Device” in our list with hair removal reviews.
Why?
Firstly, we don’t say things like that lightly – in terms of usability, performance, features and price, this one is simply our favorite (for whole-body treatments, anyway).
Secondly, we like the fact that it has two different interchangeable heads right out of the box – one with a small 2-square-centimeter window and one with a large 3-square-centimeter window.
Two Cartridges
This is the only machine we reviewed that normally comes with two differently-sized cartridges. Some of the others do allow you to purchase ones with windows of different sizes (the DEESS, for example), but this expanded functionality obviously costs extra.
The 3-square-centimeter head that comes with the iLIGHT Ultra is intended for use on legs, backs, and chests. The smaller, 2-square-centimeter head works great for smaller areas of skin that require more precision, such as the face, neckline, armpits, and bikini area. It’s not quite as narrow as the Tria Beauty tiny treatment zone, but the versatility of this machine makes up for that unless you require very fine precision.
Each cartridge delivers 65,000 flashes, which should be sufficient for achieving your desired results. The machines that emit 350,000 flashes are aimed more at women who intend to clear hair from face and body, who anticipate having to repeat treatment, or who are depilating their entire bodies from head to toe.
The Remington website claims that this is a completely painless device.
Actual use quickly disproves this, but the discomfort really is quite bearable. You should only experience real irritation in areas with coarse hair, or of course if you get the settings wrong.
For the most part, though, it is certainly less painful to use than a lot of the others on the market.
Could Its One Downside be an Upside?
Its large holding station may seem a little too big for some dressers and cabinets, but one might argue that having a stand like this one actually falls into the “pro” column.
No, it’s not a charging station. In fact, you always need a power cord, so the machine doesn’t charge, doesn’t have a battery and can’t be used cord-free (the only option on our entire list with this capability is the Tria Beauty model).
So, what purpose does this station have?
Basically, it just holds your laser hair remover when it is not in use.
This doesn’t sound like much, but when you consider that this is a delicate piece of machinery which could easily break if you toss it in a drawer, the station’s importance becomes clearer.
The LumaRx is the only other option which also has a docking station like this one. If you have a house full of people or a shared bathroom, it makes sense to ensure your depilator has a safe place to live.
- Comes with two differently sized cartridges for improved versatility.
- Ergonomic handle shape and grippy sides make it an easy device to work with.
- Users say it's not as painful as many other IPL hair treatments.
- It is tied with the LumaRx for the fastest results available from a home-use unit.
- The docking station may take up a lot of space on your countertop (but does help protect the device).
- It is not recommended for use on very coarse hair - men might want to look elsewhere.
