Seriously, if you still think that board games peaked with Monopoly (and you’re older than 12), you have another think coming. COGZ has now arrived.
If you’re good at math, you’re almost certain to enjoy it. If you’re into the Steampunk aesthetic, you’ll find it to be a thing of beauty.
Actually Playing It
Conceptually, the rules, setup and gameplay are actually less complicated than, say, The Settlers of Catan. You can figure out this aspect of the game in literally two minutes:
When you actually start playing against other people, though, things get very hard very quickly. Luckily, the actual difficulty depends on how smart and experienced your opponents are – but don’t dip a toe into these waters if your ego is easily bruised. The MENSA® society endorses this game, so don’t feel too bad if the whole thing seems like Greek to you.
The game comes in two versions, one currently $42 and a ridiculously super-sized version for $2,500. The latter would probably work best for a gaming club or a truly serious cogineer, of which there are a growing number. This is not surprising: this game is highly addictive, while numerous variants provide infinite replayability – and the developers aren’t even finished yet!
